Stevenson Holiday Baskets

“Helping Our Own”

Stevenson’s PTA has proudly participated in assembling Holiday Baskets for Burbank families in need. This year, Stevenson has specifically asked the Burbank Coordinating Council the families we adopt to receive Holiday Baskets be chosen from Stevenson. We felt it was important to reach out to our own Stevenson families in these trying times of economic hardships. We also felt that knowing the donations we are asking for were going to our very own students and their families would be very fulfilling and rewarding to all of us at Stevenson.

The Holiday Basket Coordinator from the Burbank Coordinating Council made it very clear we would not be given the names of the families we have adopted. No one at Stevenson will know the identities of the adopted families. There will be a preset drop off point and pick up time and place off campus. The Stevenson families chosen won't even know they are the recipients of Holiday Basket created by Stevenson until the day of the pick up.

The goal of the Holiday Basket program is to provide holiday meals for one full day, breakfast, lunch and dinner, and gifts for each member of the adopted families. Through a food drive and Giving Tree we hope to collect all the necessary items to create each family a Stevenson Holiday Basket unique to that family’s needs.

Food Drive: We ask that you start sending in your non-perishable food donations with your children on Monday, November 23rd. Volunteers will collect donations each day from classrooms until Friday, December 4th. Suggestions for food items are soups, tuna, can vegetables and fruits, dry cereals, pancake mix, pastas, crackers and peanut butter. Additional items needed are paper goods, and toiletries.

Giving Tree: There will be a poster of a Giving Tree set up at Stevenson. The tree will have paper leaves with the gender, age, and clothing sizes written on each leaf for the 25 adopted family members. The Giving Tree will also be on display during the Holiday Boutique from November 30 to December 3rd. We ask that you drop by and a pick a leaf of your choice. Please return your Holiday Basket donations by December 11th.

Additional information will be sent home and posted on the classroom blogs. If you would like to get involved with the Holiday Baskets, please contact us at abugnut@aol.com or call 818-522-7218. If you have any connections to clothes, grocery or toy store freebies by all means give us a call.

October Updates

Upcoming Tests:

Technology Terms TestThursday, October 15. Students have been given terms and definitions in three different forms – ask your student about it. For extra practice, go to www.tekmom.com/buzzwords. This is the website we used in the computer lab. There’s an interactive Hangman game, too!

Math, Topic 5 (Variables and Expressions) TestFriday, October 16. As for all math tests, homework pages should be kept together, as they form a useful study guide. Following this test we will be reviewing material from Topics 1-5 for a benchmark test on Wednesday of next week (October21).

Also next week (date TBD), students will be taking the District Writing Prompt. Our genre for this assessment is narrative. We’ve been working in class on all of the features that a good narrative has. Ask your student to tell you more about it.

The District wide Disaster Drill is scheduled for Thursday, October 15. This information (and more) should be available on our classroom blog. Check it out at www.stevensonpirates.net, click on “Classroom Blogs” and then on “Clarke Room 16.” Or go directly to the blog by using the following address: www.stevensonroom16.blogspot.com

Back to School Night revisited

September 17, 2009

Hello Parents,

Back to School Night looked like it was a success. I made it for the last few minutes of Mrs. Clarke presentation. It was great to see such a great turn out. And so nice to see so many familiar faces. Thanks to all the parents who volunteered for Boo Bash and updated the Parent Contact list before we had to leave the classroom. The following is a recap of the RR presentation:

The "Wish Tree"
Mrs. Clarke's "Wish Tree" is hanging in her room right next to the door and will remain there for parents to select an item to donate to our children's class until Christmas.

The "Boo Bash" Diner
Room 16 is in charge of decorating, setting up and serving coffee and punch in the "Boney Diner". We still need parents to volunteer to up setup/decorate and to serve beverages. This is a fun job because you get to visit with your friends, your kids' friends and meet new friends. A list of available times will be posted later.

"Boo Bash" Food and Drinks
Our class has been asked to donate 12 packs of sodas, Cakes for the cake walk and individually wrap bake goods for the Bob Bash Bake Sale. Several parents have already signed up so I will post what we still need a little later.

Update "Parent Contact List"
Please, if you did not have the time to update your contact information, email us your NAME, EMAIL and PHONE NUMBER to abugnut@aol.com or if you like, you may use the comments under this post to leave the information.

Thanks,
Diane O'Rourke
